Préparez-vous à suivre ces êtres énigmatiques qui évoluent dans les recoins obscurs de l’existence. Une histoire captivante qui vous fera frissonner et rêver à l’unisson.

L’auteure: Roxane Dambre

Roxane Dambre, née en 1987, écrit depuis toujours. Si elle exerce un métier scientifique (ingénieur en procédés industriels), elle consacre tout son temps libre à l’écriture. Sa première série, ANIMAE, a été traduite aux États-Unis et a reçu le Prix des lecteurs 2015 de la librairie L’Antre-Monde, et la Plume d’Or 2015, catégorie Nouvelle Plume.

Notre avis

Dans ma quête de diversification de mes lectures, je me suis laissée tenter par « Scorpi » de Roxane Dambre, lauréate du Prix de l’Imaginaire en 2017 et acclamée par le public. Le début s’est avéré intrigant : l’héroïne, Charlotte, une jeune comptable préoccupée par sa situation professionnelle, ouvre le récit dans la normalité de son quotidien pour glisser peu à peu dans l’univers fantastique et dévoiler « ceux qui marchent dans les ombres ». Ce démarrage est bien orchestré, même si certaines situations insolites trouvent leur résolution un peu trop rapidement à mon gout. L’écriture simple et fluide, quoiqu’un tantinet scolaire, donne à la lecture une certaine monotonie.

Puis très vite, le personnage principal devient incohérent et les événements s’enchaînent sans surprises. Je m’abstiendrai de mentionner les inconsistances flagrantes afin d’éviter tout spoiler. À mon sens, cet ouvrage est destiné à un lectorat jeune, adolescents et jeunes adultes, peut-être moins exigeant en matière de littérature et aux adeptes convaincus de la fantasy.

Malheureusement, je ne compte pas achever cette lecture et ne poursuivrai pas la série. Cette tentative de (re)découvrir le monde de la fantasy se solde par un échec, comme souvent, ce genre n’étant pas mon choix de prédilection.

Book review: What we think about Surrender

Like Bono’s lyrics, the writing is filled with beautiful passages, personal perspectives, and poignant experiences. While his ego comes through, and he acknowledges this, I was struck by his self-reflective and humble nature.

Bono structures the book uniquely, using a song title as a theme for each chapter and filling it with deep feelings, anecdotes, and stories from his life and the band’s past.

The man has experienced different phases of life in the public eye, and he reminds us that the truth behind it is often more intriguing. Moreover, he shows reflection, offering profound insights into what these stories mean for him and the people in his life.

You’ll find music and deep explorations of family relationships, politics, charity, business, Ireland, friendship, and reflections on life and success. It also touches on topics such as drug problems and more. This isn’t just the autobiography of a singer involved in worthy causes but a comprehensive exploration of an exceptional individual’s life.

The book follows his deep love and connection with his family, band, and God. His concept of God is one of activism, and he unapologetically uses his rock star status to make the world better. This doesn’t come off as condescending or preachy. He readily admits to mistakes, naivety, and manipulation by powerful political forces.

I enjoyed the book way more than I expected, especially in its audio version, narrated by the man himself. It gave me a glimpse into the man behind the public image, and I liked him even more. It also renewed my interest in U2’s music, as the book puts the 40 selected and referenced songs into the context of Bono and U2’s experiences and growth.

I did grow up with U2, but you don’t have to be a U2 fan to appreciate the book and Bono’s writing style, as it contains many personal struggles and initiatives he has undertaken. His style naturally evokes empathy from the reader.

The chapters fly by, keeping the reader engaged. I highly recommend “Surrender” to anyone who enjoys rock music or wants to read about a man who overcame obstacles in life. It also offers a glimpse into the sensitivity of a man who, alongside his wife, devotes significant time and effort to various causes.

Book review

I was looking for an engaging thriller I could easily delve into and have a great time, and The Midnight Man had excellent reviews. The book began promisingly enough with a haunted house, a gruesome crime, and a gloomy detective returning to the office. The writing was well-crafted, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first half.

However, as the story progressed, it shifted into territory that was too much for my taste. It became increasingly implausible and unrealistic. A single group of people seemed to be at the center of every shocking event, and the sheer number of coincidences felt overwhelming.

Despite my skepticism, I decided to see it through to the end. It’s difficult for me to describe the specifics without spoiling it for others, but I must admit that I was left disappointed. When it comes to a good thriller, I personally prefer to have the opportunity to make educated guesses and play detective myself. Unfortunately, this book fell short of my expectations in that regard.

The midnight man was my first introduction to Carolin Mitchell’s writing. While she enjoys considerable popularity, I may give her another chance in the future but I’m not particularly inclined to prioritize reading another of her works and will not continue the series.

This audiobook presents an excerpt from the author’s life’s work, delivered in a manner that can be easily understood by the average reader. It offers practical solutions to everyday problems, providing valuable insights.

The book offers valuable guidance on the principles it promotes: discovering activities that bring you joy and pushing yourself to explore your skills and purpose. These keys are instrumental in personal growth and fulfillment.

Motivational speeches and books are currently popular, and while I have come across a few good ones that offered helpful tips, many of them seem more focused on making money rather than providing genuine personal support.

A common piece of advice found in self-development books I’ve read or listened to is to minimize distractions like excessive email and phone checking. Ironically, to emphasize this point, authors often urge readers to visit their websites, subscribe to newsletters, sign up for “free” extra content, and download PDFs, unintentionally creating the very distractions they advise against. This audiobook, however, avoids such side distractions, making it more valuable compared to others. It allows you to immerse yourself in the content and experience a state of flow while listening or reading.

Unlike many listeners, I genuinely enjoyed the narrator’s voice. It felt like an intimate conversation by a comforting fireplace, reminiscent of a wise grandfather sharing his life experiences and knowledge. The absence of overly enthusiastic pep talks was refreshing.

In conclusion, I found this audiobook to be brilliant and highly recommend it.

Le livre s’ouvre sur une scène de crime effroyable dans la petite commune de Gévaugnac : une jeune fille brûlée vive dans la forêt avoisinante. La capitaine Julie Fraysse du SRPJ de Toulouse, originaire de Gévaugnac, est chargée l’enquête et se voit contrainte de consulter Novak Marrec, le policier responsable des précédents meurtres similaires attribués à un mystérieux “Immoleur” jamais arrêté. 

Novak est interné en hôpital psychiatrique, souffrant de troubles obsessionnels délirants qui le rendent incapable de distinguer la réalité de ses propres illusions. Convaincu que l’Immoleur est de retour, Novak et Julie se lancent dans une enquête complexe au sein de la communauté de Gévaugnac, où les secrets sont nombreux.

L’auteur

René Manzor, en seulement quatre romans, s’est imposé comme l’une des références du thriller français, recevant notamment le Prix Cognac du Polar francophone pour “Celui dont le nom n’est plus” et les Prix de l’Embouchure 2022 et Grand Prix Iris Noir 2021 pour “À Vif”.

Critique

Plongeant immédiatement dans l’action avec une scène d’ouverture saisissante, “À Vif” tient le lecteur en haleine dès les premières pages. L’intrigue se développe de manière fluide et rythmée, alternant entre les perspectives de Julie et de Novak. La psychologie complexe de Novak, hanté par son passé et luttant contre ses propres démons, ajoute une dimension intrigante à l’histoire. On se retrouve rapidement entraîné dans la quête de vérité de ces deux personnages, et leur collaboration forcée ajoute une tension supplémentaire au récit.

René Manzor parvient à maintenir le suspense jusqu’au dénouement, distillant habilement des indices et des rebondissements tout au long du roman. L’atmosphère oppressante de la petite communauté de Gévaugnac est décrite avec finesse, renforçant l’immersion du lecteur dans ce lieu chargé de secrets. L’auteur aborde également des thématiques profondes telles que la fragilité de l’esprit humain et la quête de vérité à tout prix.

La plume de Manzor est à la fois fluide et immersive, nous transportant aisément dans l’univers sombre et mystérieux de l’histoire. Les descriptions sont justement dosées, permettant de visualiser les scènes sans alourdir le récit. Son style littéraire accessible et entraînant rend la lecture de “À Vif” très agréable et addictive.

Je découvre René Manzor à travers ce roman que j’ai dévoré, j’ai hâte de me replonger dans un de ses romans pour un bon de moment de lecture. Si vous êtes adeptes de ce genre de lectures, je recommande vivement.

En vacances à la montagne, Patrick Flint, jeune médecin aventureux, bouleversé par la disparition de sa fille doit se lancer à sa poursuite.

Patrick Flint n’aspire qu’à s’offrir une escapade paisible dans les montagnes du Wyoming pour profiter de ses rares jours de congé. Il en a assez des célébrations du bicentenaire, des familles de patients en colère, des campeurs qui descendent de la montagne défoncés au speed et des appels nocturnes pour remplacer le vétérinaire de la ville. Mais à peine franchit-il le seuil de sa maison, sa femme Susanne lui annonce qu’elle refuse de faire partie du voyage. Elle le laisse seul avec sa fille Trish, une adolescente amoureuse, et son fils Perry, certes enthousiaste, mais lui aussi adolescent. Patrick, blessé, reste bien déterminé, malgré l’annonce d’un meurtrier en cavale de l’autre côté de la montagne.

Après deux jours de randonnée à cheval sous la pluie pour chasser et pêcher, Patrick n’a récolté que des rencontres bizarres, des chaussettes mouillées et une fille pleurnicharde. Alors, le troisième jour, lorsque Trish le supplie de rester au campement pour lire, Patrick se sent secrètement soulagé.

Pendant ce temps, en ville, Susanne traverse aussi des moments difficiles : un cambriolage, une épave, et le pressentiment que quelque chose ne tourne pas rond autour de sa famille. Incapable d’ignorer ses craintes croissantes, elle sollicite l’aide d’une de ses voisines au caractère bien trempé, typique du Wyoming, et les deux femmes se dirigent vers les montagnes.

À leur retour au camp, Patrick et Perry découvrent la disparition de Trish, ainsi que celle des chevaux, du camion et de la remorque. Les indices désignent des directions opposées. Patrick a retrouvé une note écrite par un garçon au campement. S’est-elle enfuie avec lui ? Ou a-t-elle été kidnappée comme le suggèrent les marques de sabots sur leur tente détruite ? En tout cas, toutes les traces conduisent vers les montagnes, et non vers la vallée. Les secours, trop éloignés, n’arriveront jamais avant que les traces de Trish ne soient effacées. Patrick et Perry se lancent alors dans un périple désespéré dans la nature sauvage pour la retrouver. Susanne les suit de près.
